Sweet Black Soybeans

A friend of mine recently returned from a trip to Japan and brought me back some black soybeans, or kuromame. They are a traditional food most often served on special occasions such as New Years. They are sweet and entirely unlike the black beans that I’m used to eating here…and once you cook them, they actually get really really big!

I enjoyed them for breakfast with a bowl of brown rice and some eggplant which I cooked with soy sauce, crushed chili peppers, and a drop of sesame oil.
